Yesterday, I was feeling a bit nostalgic on the way home from work and put on Harvey Danger's "King James Version." Hadn't listened to it in a few months, and it felt good to reconnect with an album I have adored since the moment it was introduced upon me.
Last night, I got a comment on my livejournal from twerpalicious, informing me that after 15 plus years (with some unofficial breaks in the middle here and there), Harvey Danger is officially calling it quits. As their website puts it, "After 15 years, three albums, hundreds of shows, and far more twists and turns than we ever imagined possible, we've decided to put Harvey Danger to rest. The decision is totally mutual and utterly amicable. Everyone is very proud of the work we've done together, but we've also come to feel that our collaboration has--in a very positive way--run its course. We're all eager to try our hands at other projects, musical and otherwise."
I'm happy to see that the split is on amicable terms, and that we could very well see further work out of some combination of band members in the future. I was happy to have seen Harvey Danger the last time they made their way to the east coast, and feel privileged to have had their music to listen to over the past 9 years or so, after laurasubby introduced me to the full extent of their catalog.
When a band I love breaks up, I'm a bit torn. On the one hand, I'm happy to have listened to what they put out. On the other hand, I'm sad that I will not be able to hear any new material in their unique voice again. It also makes me feel a bit old, since one of the signs that times are changing is when the bands you grew up with go away, to be replaced by new ones.
Harvey Danger will be conducting a farewell tour, and I may very well make my way out to at least one of the performances. Here's the full list for those who are interested:

I have a $100 credit from Jetblue to use, and Chicago is a reasonably cheap destination in comparison to Seattle, so I might make a weekend out of it to see one of my favorite bands perform for the last time. If anyone else is up for it, I'd be happy to split a hotel room.
Thanks for all the good times, Harvey Danger. And here's looking forward to whatever else Sean Nelson, Jeff Lin, Aaron Huffman, Michael Welke, and Rob Knop have in store for the music world in the future.
And for the last time, no one in the band is named Harvey. :)
